Gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) is a slowly developing disease of the gums and the bones that support the teeth. If you think of our teeth as a row of the picket fence, the ground soil is what’s holding and supporting this fence. Gum disease is like having diseased soil that won’t stand the test of time, gradually causing the fence to fall over, i.e. losing your teeth.
Gum diseases progress slowly and often painlessly. Bacteria burrow further into the periodontal pockets, causing irreversible damage to the supporting gums and bones. Gum diseases will eventually lead to tooth loss. If you have loose or missing teeth due to gum disease, often other teeth will become overloaded and gradually become loose aswell.
Many people are not aware that they have gum disease. Often we hear them say "but I brush twice a day, and sometimes I even floss"! So what is the missing link? If you think back, most of us have never been taught how to brush properly, we either watch our parents or just make it up as we grow up! No wonder there is a huge variation on how well a person cleans their teeth!
